Perfect Infinitives ที่ตามหลังกริยาช่วย

1. should

ought to

He ought to have written to me.(but he didn’t)

2. could have + V แสดงความสามารถที่ตรงข้ามกับความจริงในอดีต

He couldn’t have swum across this river. (but he did)

3. should

Would

แสดงความปรารถนาที่ตรงข้ามกันในอดีต

I should have liked to see it. (but I didn’t)

4. was/were to have + V เป็นการวางแผนที่ตรงข้ามในอดีต

The house was to have been ready today. (but as there has been a builders’ strike it is still only half finished.)

(ข้อ 1-4 จะตรงข้ามความจริงในอดีต)

5. needn’t have + V ไม่จำเป็นแต่ก็ได้กระทำ

I needn’t have written to him because he phoned me shortly afterwards.

(but I didn’t write, thus wasting my time)

didn’t have to ไม่จำเป็นก็ไม่กระทำ

I didn’t have to translate it for him for he understands Latin.

Might

He may have come

He might have come. (เพิ่มความสงสัย)
