การใช้คำนามในภาษาอังกฤษเกี่ยวข้องกับกานใช้ article (a,an,the) ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็นการใช้อย่างชี้เฉพาะและไม่ชี้เฉพาะ

some, any ใช้นำหน้า plural nouns และ uncountable noun ได้ในกรณีที่ใช้อย่างไม่ชี้เฉพาะ

การใช้ the ในกรณีต่างๆ เช่น

1. ชื่อแม่น้ำ The River Thames, The Chao Phya River.
2. ชื่อทะเล The Mediterranian Sea, The Red Sea, The Dead Sea
3. ชื่อมหาสมุทร The Pacific Ocean, The Atlantic Ocean
4. ชื่ออ่าว The Gulf of Thailand
5. ชื่อช่องแคบ The English Channel
6. ชื่อบุคคลสำคัญและนำมาใช้เป็นชื่อเรือ etc. เช่น The Queen Elizabeth
7. ชื่อเทือกเขา The Alps แต่ยอดเขาไม่ใช้ the เช่น Mount Blanc, Mount Everest
8. ชื่อหมู่เกาะ The West Indies แต่เกาะๆเดียวไม่ใช้ article เช่น Ceylon
9. ชื่อประเทศ ถ้ามีคำว่า state, republic, kingdom ใช้ the เช่น The United States of America
10. ชื่อหนังสือสำคัญ The Bible
11. สถานที่สำคัญ The Parliament, The Congress
12. สิ่งของที่มีเพียงชิ้นเดียวในโลก เช่น The sun, The earth, The moon
13. ชื่อหนังสือพิมพ์ใช้ the เช่น The nation, The Bangkok Post

แต่ชื่อนิตยสารไม่ใช้ เช่น Newsweek, Time

1. ชื่อกีฬาตามหลัง to play ไม่ใช้ the เช่น He plays tennis very well.

แต่ถ้าเครื่องดนตรีตามหลัง to play ใช้ the เช่น He plays the piano.

15. ชื่อทิศทางภูมิศาสตร์ ถ้าหมายถึง ภาคหรือชื่อทิศ ใช้ the

The west of Thailand.

The north is colder than the south.

ข้อสังเกต : การใช้ the กับทิศ (east, west, north, south) นอกจากใช้เป็นคำนามแล้ว ยังเป็น adverb ได้ สังเกตไม่ใช้ “The” นำหน้าชื่อทิศ

1. She is going to the north. (noun)
2. She is going south. (adv.)
3. If you look to the south, the north is behind you.

ใช้ the นำหน้าทิศหรือไม่ใช้ก็ได้ แต่ถ้าบอกทิศทางไม่ใช้ the เช่น

The wind blew from north to south.

1. การใช้ the และไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า noun ต่อไปนี้มีความหมายแตกต่างกัน

I go	to church to pray. to school to study. to college to study. to bed to sleep. to sea as sailors. to market to buy or sell. to hospital as patients. to prison as prisoners. to court as litigants. to work as workers.

ถ้ามี the นำหน้า noun หมายถึง ตัวอาคารสถานที่

I went to the school to see the headmaster.

17. Double comparative เป็นการบอกลักษณะการเพิ่มหรือลดลงในลักษณะเดียวกัน

You eat more. You get fatter.

= The more you eat, the fatter you get.
